The Limburg Region – A Cyclist’s Paradise : Special maps refer to these nodes and their corresponding distances in a clear manner. At a glance, you can see where you are located and how many kilometers are left before your destination. Also shown are train stations, directions to city centers, hills, and unpaved roads running through pristine nature areas. This system allows for unlimited route combinations. All you need to know are the numbers associated with the routes that you wish to follow, making the use of a map hardly necessary. 1. The Kempen and Maas RegionsThe Kempen and Maas cycling route network (650 km) forms a section of the international Kempen and Maas Regional Landscape and Netherlands Border-Limburg network (a total of 1000 km). These routes take you through a variety of woodlands and natural areas. Picturesque villages offer cafÈs and night accommodations that welcome cyclists. Cities such as Maaseik, Stokkem, Genk, Bree, Lanaken, as well as Maasmechelen Village and its factory outlet stores are linked through this unique node-based system. Additional points of interest include the coal mine basin’s numerous nature preserves. This is the most recent network from the Limburg Cyclist Paradise region (completed and marked in 2002). From East to West, this represents a large bike route network of approx. 680 km. You will encounter surprisingly diverse scenery -- including broad valleys, open fields, orchards, imposing castles and farmhouses, nature trails and lakes. The Hesbaye region is also endowed with a rich cultural heritage. Don’t miss the historic cities of Sint-Truiden and Hasselt, the old county town of Borgloon and its 13 castles, as well as Belgium’s oldest city of Tongeren, Bilzen and other typical towns and communities of the Hesbaye region. This route is a must during the spring and harvest seasons. 3. The Limburg Kempen Region This bike route network owes its international character to a connection with the Netherlands’ North-Brabant province. From Lommel to Neerpelt and from Leopoldsburg to Zonhoven, this route takes you through woodland and heather-covered moors. The Limburg Kempen network features 450 kms of cycling routes. It will take you across the border, to Deurne near the city of Diest, and to Vorst-Laakdal and Meerhout in the Antwerp province. These secure and peaceful routes are ideal for recreational cyclists of all ages. This network gives you access to the Kempen region where a number of points of interest await you, such as de Paalse Plas estate and the Flemish Mine Museum of Beringen, Heusden-Zolder’s Bovy estate, Lummen’s Schulensmeer, Zonhoven’s visitor center, the towns of Peer and Lommel, and the Achelse Kluis monastery. Nature preserves also lend the Kempen region a unique character, such as the Sahara in Lommel, the Zwarte Beek (Lummen – Beringen), Plateau Hageven, and the Pijnven estate. 4. The Kempen and Maas Border Crossing Network This route network is approximately 1,000 km long. It encompasses the Kempen and Maas region network and a section of the Netherlands’ Midden-Limburg region. Over 300 km are free of auto traffic. Belgium’s trusted blue signposts become green after you’ve crossed into the Netherlands. By taking a ferry across the River Maas, you can easily discover a part of the Netherlands’ Limburg region. You’ll notice that this region is picturesque on either side of the Maas.
